St Mary's Church, Hartley Wintney
About
St Mary's Church was originally built by nuns, and now consists of a thirteenth-century nave and chancel, while the transepts and flint tower are nineteenth-century additions. Highlights include the remains of thirteenth-century wall paintings, including one of St Christopher. Also search out the graves of two commanders of the British Army - General Henry 'Hangman'; Hawley, who defeated Bonny Prince Charlie at Culloden, and Field Marshal Lord Alanbrooke, Churchill's closest military advisor during the Second World War.
St Mary's Church is open to the public on Sunday afternoons, between 14:30 and 16:30, from Easter until mid-September. During these times volunteers from ‘Friends of St Mary’s’ will be in attendance to answer any queries. Outside of the scheduled Sunday opening times, access can be arranged via emailing fosm.hw.hamp@gmail.com
